From One to a Dozen....
Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", June 2004, page 16

Until this spring, only one CD 141.7 Twiggs was known to the hobby. Now, count 12 more.

Collector Andy Wadysz of Michigan says he stopped by an antique shop one day, and noticed two CD 141.7's in a window. They are the two in the bottom picture on page 17 that are starting to turn amethyst. While buying the two, Andy asked the owner if he had more. And out of a box came another ten.

Carol McDougald, former owner of Crown Jewels magazine, found the first one years ago at a flea market. She paid the grand sum of $5.00 for hers. With only one known, its estimated value soared. The Price Guide listed it at $20,000 plus.

Andy says he may sell a half-dozen from his find. He writes, "I believe a proper price range is from $12K for the lesser ones (with minor damage) to about $18K or $20K for the best."

When asked about the Twiggs insulators Andy found, Carol wrote: "We have seen the entire battery of photos. They certainly look like the one we owned. Without checking the mold markings on the original, we can't tell if they are from the same mold or not. Dick Bowman (current owner of the original) will be bringing it to the National show for comparison. Great find!"

Andy tells Crown Jewels he'll be bringing two of them to the National show also. The National is in the Pittsburg area July 23-25 (see the full page ad on page 13 of this issue).

Except for the two that are starting to turn amethyst, CD 141.7's are all made of crystal clear glass. As a result they reflect color from their surroundings, making picture taking difficult. The photo on the right in the middle of the adjacent page is probably closest to being accurate, and even it has picked up blue tones from the carpet beneath it.

Collector Tommy Bolack has purchased two Twiggs, one clear and one that's starting to turn amethyst. Tommy tells Crown Jewels he plans to put the amethyst into a light box to see how dark amethyst it might turn.

CD 141.7's are embossed on the dome: W.R. TWIGGS PAT AUG 29 1905
